What is Ayurvedic Massage?

There are many Ayurvedic body treatments to heal, restore and rejuvenate. Ayurvedic Massage composed of Garshana and Abyanga is a core treatment for Rejuvenation.
It starts with an invigorating raw silk glove massage called Garshana. The therapist wears the gloves and delivers a vigorous and relaxing treatment to the whole body. This serves to exfoliate dead skin cells, stimulate the lymph (the garbage collector of the body) and blood, and also sets up a charge that attracts the medicinal oil that is going to be applied after the raw silk glove massage.
Then medicinal oil is generously applied with relaxing strokes that deliver toxins from the tissues to the Gastro-Intestinal tract to be removed from the body. This is called Abyangha and is a very healing form of treatment aimed at helping to detoxify the body so everything works better.
What kind of oil is used?

Unlike many oil massages, the quality and type of oil used is very important. Only the highest quality organic sesame oil is used as the base oil. Sesame oil has been proven to strengthen bones and it calms the central nervous system leading to deep relaxation.
The sesame oil is infused with three essential oils. One of those will be a stimulating essence like lemon, another essential oil will be calming such as lavender, and another oil will be dispersing to aid in moving toxins such as geranium oil. The types of essences change depending on the season and the condition of the person being treated. The oil is also infused with three Ayurvedic herbs - Ashwaganda, Shatavari, and Gotu Cola, to help calm inflammation, while strengthening and cleansing the body.

What should I expect?

The massage is best without underwear in order to treat the gluteus area, but you may wear yours if you want-just wear a pair that you don't mind getting an oil stain on and know that the hip area will be excluded (thongs are fine).
Draping with blankets is discreet and your privacy is respected. The first treatment takes 1 1/2 hours to complete, including intake. During that time, the therapist may spent extra time on areas of discomfort for a therapeutic effect. Pressure is adjusted to the individual. After the massage, you may towel any excess off or wear some old clothes so that you can allow the oil to seep in. There won't be tons of it but any extra is a bonus!
What do I need to know before my first treatment?

Don't eat before any massage. You don't want your body to be trying to digest a meal and detox at the same time. Leave at least an hour after a meal and preferably two hours before a massage.

Do plan to take it easy after the massage to receive the most benefit from the work.

Do arrive well hydrated.

Do arrive on time so the therapist does not feel rushed or has to shorten your treatment.

An epsom salts bath the night before will help kick start your detox.
